Texas shooting suspect says he planned crime with the devil
Kody Lott says he was upset he didn't have a girlfriend and planned the shooting of two teen girls with the devil. Kody LottWichita Falls Police via Twitter  WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- A man accused of shooting two teen girls as they walked home from school, killing one, told police that he planned the crime with the help of the devil, reports say. The Wichita Falls Times Record News obtained the arrest warrant affidavits for Kody Lott, 20, who has been charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with last week's shooting. (The affidavits can be seen below. Mobile users can see them here.) In the affidavit, police say Lott confessed to shooting Lauren Landavazo and Makayla Smith, both 13, on Sept. 2. The two girls were walking home from school when Lott reportedly pulled up in his car and fired at least 15 shots from a .22-caliber rifle. Lauren was hit 14 times and was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Makayla was wounded but survived.  Lott was arrested a day later after police received a report of a person acting suspiciously and were given the license-plate number from Lott's vehicle. Officers searched Lott's vehicle and found a spent casing from a .22-caliber rifle. Police say Lott thought Lauren was attractive but knew she had a boyfriend, and Lott was angry he didn't have a girlfriend. He told police he went to his father's apartment and retrieved a .22-caliber rifle and waited for Lauren and Makayla to walk by. Lott told police he was upset that the killing had been described in the media as "senseless," say he had planned the shooting while speaking with the devil. Lott is being held in jail on a $4 million bond. State highway patrol chase ends in crash at Cleveland gas station
The pursuit was initiated about 10:30 p.m. and lasted about five minutes, the state highway patrol said Sunday. CLEVELAND, Ohio - A state highway patrol chase ended in a crash Saturday night at a Cleveland gas station. A state highway patrol chase ended in a crash Saturday night at a Cleveland gas station.Ohio State Highway Patrol  The pursuit began about 10:30 p.m. after a trooper attempted a traffic stop on Interstate 90 westbound, the patrol said Sunday. A Chevy Blazer was driving 80 mph in a 60 mph zone, and the driver of the Blazer pulled off into the right berm when he was stopped. As the trooper walked toward the Blazer, the driver took off. The trooper then initiated the pursuit. The chase continued after the Blazer exited the highway at East 55th Street, the patrol said. It ended when the Blazer's driver tried to turn right onto St. Clair Avenue from East 55th Street but turned too far and flipped the truck. The truck struck a car that was sitting at a gas pump. No gas pumps at the station were hit, the patrol said. The chase lasted about five minutes, the patrol said. All three of the Blazer's passengers suffered minor injuries, the patrol said. The male driver had a felony warrant and was taken into custody. He is facing OVI and fleeing charges in connection with the chase. One female passenger was also arrested on a felony warrant, and she also faces a possession of drug paraphernalia charge, the patrol said. A second female passenger was uninjured and not arrested. The Cleveland police accident investigation unit assisted the state highway patrol at the crash scene, Cleveland police spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said. Immigration law firm holds 'Know Your Rights' workshop at Painesville library
The free workshop was Wednesday night held in Painesville, a community that holds a large Latino community. Watch video PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- A law firm that specializes in immigration law held a "Know Your Rights" workshop Wednesday in response to the country's current immigration climate. "We want to make sure that [immigrants] know that Trump's not God. He's not the king. They can't just rip up the Constitution," Richard Herman, an immigration attorney who heads the Herman Legal Group, told cleveland.com. He said he has many clients in Painesville and wanted to inform and remind immigrants that they have protected rights under the Constitution, even if they are not U.S. citizens. The meeting was held at the Morley Library in Painesville, a community that includes a large Latino community. The city's Latino population doubled between 2000 and 2010, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, and the majority of them trace back to central Mexico. Within the past week, about 700 immigrants were arrested across the country by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. While the raids were mostly targeted to catch individuals for whom ICE had a warrant to detain, they did break with Obama-era policy that prohibited collateral arrests -- arrests of additional undocumented immigrants who were not named in an arrest warrant, according to Vox.com. Though Northeast Ohio has not yet seen an ICE raid under the Trump administration, the attorneys at Wednesday's workshop wanted the community to be aware of their rights if law enforcement comes knocking. "The immigrant community has to prepare for worst-case scenarios under the new administration, which may include an increase in immigration arrests and placement in removal proceedings, and repeal of some of Obama's executive orders like DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)," a news release from the law firm regarding the presentation says. Herman addressed the group of about 15 immigrant attendees in English. His colleague Frank Krajenke translated the presentation into Spanish. Packets of information, including samples of an ICE warrant and a warrant signed by a judge, were handed out to the attendees. Herman also touched on the importance of a family emergency plan -- like what to do if a parent is arrested while their American child is in school. A small group of protesters lingered outside the meeting room before the workshop began, Herman said, though they left by the time it began. See and hear more of what the immigration rights workshop had to offer in the video above.
