Essay: Things I learned covering the Westminster dog show
I grew up with dogs (and a cat), as well as a mother who loved dogs -- especially Siberian huskies. We had an illustrated book of dog breeds on the living room bookshelf, and I pored over it so often that from a pretty young age I could tell you whether the burly pooch walking down the street was a Saint Bernard or a Bernese mountain dog or a Great Pyrenees.

Waterloo Alley Cat Project throws cat-tastic benefit party this weekend
The Waterloo Alley Cat Project is throwing a cat-tastic benefit this weekend. CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Waterloo Alley Cat Project is throwing a cat-tastic party this weekend. On Saturday, Feb. 18, the local rescue group/animal charity is holding its Eighth Annual Fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. at the historic Slovenian Worker's Home, 15335 Waterloo Road in Cleveland. This year, the group has added a $1,000 Grand Prize Raffle to the festivities, along with basket raffles and silent auction items. Music will be provided by Ace Molar, featuring Todd Meany from WJW Channel 8. Admission is $20 per person. All money raised goes to help Waterloo's community cats. Donations of cat food and cat supplies will be accepted at the door and are greatly appreciated. Since 2009, WACP has made it its mission to humanely care for all of the feral and stray cats within a target area around Waterloo Road, making sure these cats remain safe, healthy and cared for by a group of trained volunteers. Cat overpopulation is a constant struggle in the area, and the Waterloo Alley Cat Project works to maintain and control the population of feral cats. WACP has cared for hundreds of cats through spay and neuter programs and providing shelter and food. To donate to the group, please make checks payable to Northeast Shores Development Corp., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that acts as fiscal agent for the Waterloo Alley Cat Project. Please write WACP in the memo line of your check and mail to: P.O. Box 19246, Cleveland, Ohio 44119.

Animal shelter spays 200 pets to raise awareness of overpopulation of strays Other less-suspecting dogs scampered as far as their leashes would allow, sniffing and jumping in blissful ignorance. [...] the felines, always enigmatic, quietly judged the situation from within their mesh carriers. The 200 slots filled up far quicker than expected, organizers said, and some people showed up without appointments hoping their animals could join the lineup. In the adjoining rooms, dogs in kennels clamored for attention from anyone who walked by. White, who fosters as many as 12 dogs at a time, put two small puppies up for adoption Saturday, adding to the roughly 270 animals that the shelter typically houses.
