Retired generals from Ohio stress their support for Hillary Clinton ahead of Donald Trump's Cleveland appearance
Two Ohio-born retired generals criticized Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump ahead of the billionaire's appearance at a Cleveland charter school on Thursday — and stressed their support of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in a news conference organized by her campaign. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two retired generals from Ohio stressed their support of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in a news conference organized by her campaign, ahead of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's appearance at a Cleveland charter school on Thursday. Four Star Retired Gen. Johnnie Wilson, who grew up in Lorain, emphasized Clinton's commitment to the military and their families -- and said he was hurt by Trump's criticism of a Khizr Khan, a Muslim American military father who lost his son in Iraq. "Hillary has been a staunch supporter of the military her entire adult life," Wilson said.  "She understands what a military family endures." Wilson also questioned how Trump would handle conflicts with foreign counties. He said while he believed Clinton would listen to advisers, he was doubtful Trump would hear out their advice. "She's a very compassionate person, but at the same time, she's very decisive," Wilson said of Clinton.  "She's the person who will sit around the table with us, and receive input and make a decision. I think Donald, he'll sit for the cameras but he will say I already know what I want to do." Wilson was joined by Brigadier General Larry Gillespie of Cincinnati, who underscored Clinton's experience. "She's been in public service for over 30 years. She's been the First Lady of Arkansas. She's been the First Lady of this country. She's been a senator from New York. She's been the Secretary of State and she served well. She served very well." Gillespie said. "Who has the experience? Who has the better resume?" The Clinton campaign on Wednesday released a list of 95 retired generals and admirals who have endorsed her candidacy for president. "Clinton is getting the backing of more senior military service members and former officials with command and management experience than any non-incumbent Democrat due to her proven record of diplomacy and steady leadership on the world stage," her campaign said in a news release.
