|Mandel JCC Cleveland Jewish FilmFest offers global perspective|
This year marks a decade-long milestone for the film fest. Films will showcase Jewish life around the globe, from rock music to basketball to documentaries and dramas. Watch video CLEVELAND, Ohio -- This year marks a decade-long milestone for the JCC Cleveland Jewish FilmFest. Though it returns to its home base of the Cleveland Heights arthouse Cedar Lee Theatre, the fest, which kicks off Thursday and runs through Sept. 18, will also be branching out around the city. One highlight includes a free screening of "The Blind Hero" at Cuyahoga County Public Library's Snow branch in Parma. The docu-drama tells the story of a factory owner who was able to shield workers from the Nazis. "It shows the goodness of people," says film fest director Deborah Bobrow. This year continues the focus on highlighting global stories tied together through Jewish themes, from romance in Sweden (opening night film "Fever at Dawn") to rock music. "Rock in the Red Zone" documents the music created in a bomb shelter-turned-rock club in the Israeli town of Sderot that is bombarded with rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. "We really try to show Jewish life all over the world," Bobrow says. Three to see "On the Map" - When Maccabi Tel Aviv's basketball team conquered the seemingly indestructible Red Army team in the 1977 EuroCup Semifinals, their star player uttered, "We're finally on the map." Clevelanders may be able to relate. In fact, many locals may recognize the Tel Aviv team for their ties to former Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt, who carried them to the finals before he came to Cleveland. This documentary traces their incredible journey. "Sabena Hijacking: My Version" - This riveting docu-drama recreates the Israeli Special Forces' bold operation to take back Sabena Flight 971 after it was seized by the Palestinian group Black September. The pulse-pounding portrayal offers perspectives from all involved, including the highjackers themselves. "The Tenth Man" - Ariel's father is highly regarded in the religious community, but it often kept him away from home and removed from Ariel's upbringing. This heartfelt drama finds the two reconnecting in El Once, the Jewish quarter of Buenos Aires.
