Tear-out of Great Lakes Science Center theater at full throttle (video)
Major tear-out lays a foundation for the rebirth of the Great Lakes Science Center's former Cleveland Clinic Omnimax Theater. Watch video CLEVELAND, Ohio - A theater is said to "go dark" when there is no show. The Great Lakes Science Center's former Omnimax Theater did that August 29th after the last movie. But as of Tuesday the term took on new meaning because GLSC staff and others began dismantling the equipment that served the theater for the past two decades. Most of the furnishings and carpeting also is being replaced. The most radical change is in the projection booth. Before a first-of-its-kind digital three-projector laser projection system can go, the old system has to come out. Projectionists Jeffry Johnson and Scott Woodruff began dismantling the old system on Tuesday. Giant reels of film were scattered about as they worked. These are generally at least 40 inches across. Some arrive that way, while others have been assembled at the theater by splicing more than a dozen smaller reels together. One of the most demanding tasks was pulling out the xenon projection lamps, which look like large jugs with steel projections at each end. Johnson said they had to wear protective gear because the lamps, each worth $6,000, are under pressure. In use, each one is powered by 15,000 watts with cooling provided by deionized distilled water. The digitalization of images eliminates the high cost of acquiring and shipping large, heavy film prints. Thong Nguyen, a technician from Omnimax corporate headquarters near Toronto, Ontario, said he his helping with the dismantling because some of the equipment can be put back to work at other Omnimax venues around the world. The revamped space is supposed to open next month, when it will be called the Cleveland Clinic Dome Theater, a natural choice because a substantial gift at the dawn of the science center gave the clinic the naming rights for the space. The sophisticated digital system results from between D3D Cinema and Christie Digital Systems, and will feature ultra-high 6K resolution. The science center recently completed a $1.8 million capital campaign to finance the digital conversion and theater remodel, according to the press release. Benefactors included the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, the Fred A. Lennon Charitable Trust, the Lubrizol Foundation, the Cliffs Foundation, PNC Foundation and other corporations, foundations and private citizens supported the campaign.

Great Lakes Brewing Co. tops national best brewpub competition; voting under way
Great Lakes Brewing Co. is atop the leaderboard in USA Today's best brewpub competition. Voting is under way. CLEVELAND, Ohio - As of Tuesday evening, Great Lakes Brewing Co. held the top spot in USA Today's best brewpub competition. Ohio's first craft brewery is the only one from the Buckeye state in the top 20. Voting runs through Monday, March 13, so the leaderboard can rotate based on incoming votes over the next month. Winners will be announced Friday, March 17. One vote per day is allowed. Here's how USA Today describes Great Lakes: "Great Lakes Brewing Company was started by two brothers with limited brewing experience in 1986. Today, it's one of Cleveland's top destinations for good beer and good food. Located in the Ohio City neighborhood, the GLBC brewpub features an eco-friendly beer garden with a retractable roof, where guests can sip a beer while sampling from a menu of seasonal menu items made from locally-sourced ingredients." The brewery actually opened in 1988. All 20 of the list's brewpubs, which were nominated as the best in the country by a panel of beer experts, serve their own beers. Check out the leaderboard.

Cleveland ties high temperature record of 60 degrees previously set in 1925
Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport tied the high temperature record of 60 degrees previously set in 1925. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It's official, Cleveland, we've tied the high temperature record for today, previously set in 1925, when the mercury hit 60 degrees around 1 p.m. Cleveland Hopkins Airport has hit 60 degrees so far today. This ties the record set in 1925. #ohwx #clewx -- NWS Cleveland (@NWSCLE) February 7, 2017 The warm temperatures are due to both a passing warm front, and strong southerly flow dragging in that warm, moist air from the Gulf. The high usually peaks around 2 to 3 p.m., so we could still break the record too, not just tie it. That heavy moisture sparked instability which also caused strong thunderstorms, so strong that the National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a flood warning for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties through 11:30 p.m. tonight. Great Lakes Science Center builds on LEGO legend (photos, video)
Great Lakes Science Center harnesses the magnetic power of LEGO building blocks in a temporary exhibit. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Great Lakes Science Center's "Build it!" exhibit that opens Saturday is built out of Legos and stands as one of its most ambitious temporary displays. New features will be added between the opening and the final curtain in early September. And a significant part of it has been designed and executed by the science center's staff, with the rest a loan from the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Dr. Kirsten Ellenbogen, the center's president and CEO, said Wednesday that the organization "values creativity and experimentation as part of the experience for our guests." Video created for the Great Lakes Science Center by Michael Hickox whose stop-action animation is popular on YouTube. The Indianapolis components are mostly static displays of medieval castles. Six exhibits are the work of GLSC staff and all are hands-on and interactive, which the science center prefers. "This represents a move to do our own exhibits instead of relying on travelling displays," said Sue Allen, the center's vice president for marketing. "We can't change traveling exhibits but we can adjust and improve ours for our guests," Ellenbogen said. These are the locally produced elements: Race tracks with a Lego car building station  Brick puzzle mazes made by local expert builder Arthur Gugick  An area where guests can make brick mosaic artwork to put on temporary display A blind-build challenge where guests use only their sense of touch to construct a specific mini-kit. Four stop-motion animation stations where guests can make their own Lego mini-movies A black brick station where guests discover how to sculpt using bricks Build It! will play out in three phases. The first opens Saturday and includes the displays from Indianapolis. When that leaves May 4, the second phase will retain the locally produced material as well as "Explore It!" - a 10-day festival running from May 27 through June 4 featuring workshops, opportunities to meet Lego experts, hand-selected sculptures from some of the best Lego artists in the country, and a few Lego related surprises. "Move It!" is the theme of phase three, from June 17 through September 4, and it will feature the selected sculptures from Explore It!, simple machine exhibits developed by Lego expert Adam Ward that will inspire guests to build their own simple machine contraptions, and exhibits that let guests build and play with Lego Mindstorms robotics. Presenting sponsor is ArcelorMittal, which has facilities throughout the United States, including a steel-producing operation near Steelyard Commons. The Great Lakes Science Center is at 601 Erieside Ave. in downtown Cleveland (hours and admission).
