Passer-by shoots man attacking Florida deputy during traffic stop
The bystander shot the man attacking the deputy after first warning him to stop, reports say. Watch video ESTERO, Florida -- A sheriff in Florida is hailing a man as a hero after the man shot and killed a person who was attacking a deputy during a traffic stop. Authorities with the Lee County Sheriff's Office are not identifying the man, who was driving on Interstate 75 Monday when he noticed the deputy being assaulted near an off-ramp. According to the News-Press, Deputy First Class Dean Bardes was at the scene of another crash on I-75 when a car speeding at an estimated 100 mph nearly struck the deputy. Bardes began pursuing the vehicle when the suspect, identified as Edward Strother, 53, pulled the car over at an off-ramp. Strother is accused of getting out of his car and attacking Bardes, wrestling him to the ground, reports say. "He just kept beating him and beating him," Shanta Holditch, a witness, tells abc-7.com.  Witnesses tell abc7.com that the armed passer-by got out of his car and ran up, telling Strother to stop attacking the deputy or he would shoot. When Strother continued to attack Bardes, the passer-by fired three shots, killing Strother. "[He] refused to get off the officer and the officer kept yelling, 'Shoot him, shoot him, shoot him,'" Holditch said. Bardes was treated and released at an area hospital, reports say. Officials with the sheriff's department are not releasing the shooter's name, saying it's an ongoing investigation, naplesnews.com reports. But Sheriff Mike Scott is calling the man a hero and a good Samaritan. According to naplesnews.com, a Fort Myers, Fla., gun dealer gave the shooter a new gun on Tuesday. The bystander has a concealed-carry permit, reports say. "We reached out to the Lee County sheriff," Shoot Straight manager Mark Williams tells naplesnews.com. "He had to impound the gun for evidence. We wanted to donate a gun so this man's not unarmed."
