August is deadliest month for heroin, fentanyl overdoses in Cuyahoga County history
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner said August was the deadliest month in county history for heroin and fentanyl deaths. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- More people died last month from heroin or fentanyl than any other month in Cuyahoga County history, the medical examiner said. The 52 deaths represent a continuing spike in opioid related deaths in the county. The three deadliest months for opioid deaths have come in 2016. And there has already been 14 deaths in September from heroin, fentanyl or carfentanil, an elephant sedative some 100 times more potent the fentanyl and 2,500 times more potent than heroin. Carfentanil is now suspected in at least two overdose deaths in Cuyahoga County. Ten people died of overdoses on the drugs over the Labor Day weekend, the medical examiner said. The county has seen at least 330 overdose deaths this year, which already has dwarfed the 228 who died of overdoses in all of 2015. The medical examiner expects more than 500 overdose deaths by the end of the year. Fifteen of the August deaths came in the first three days of the month. July deaths were also above normal. Forty-eight people died of heroin or fentanyl overdoses that month, which is the third worst month for opioid deaths for a single month. The second worst total came in March, when 50 people died. Thirty-one people died of heroin or fentanyl overdoses in June, 45 in May, 33 in April, 50 in March, 27 in February and 30 in January, according to the medical examiner's data. This post will be updated.

Garrettsville bowling alley raffle likely to reach $2 million as Queen of Hearts remains elusive
The jackpot for the Queen of Hearts raffle at SkyLane Bowling is expected to reach $2 million after the card remained hidden in Sunday's drawing. GARRETTSVILLE, Ohio - The jackpot for the Queen of Hearts raffle at SkyLane Bowling is still growing and is expected to reach $2 million -- making it the largest Queen of Hearts raffle in Ohio. Until now, the state's largest jackpot for the nonprofit raffle was $1.8 million in October 2015 at Barry Dyngles restaurant in Austintown. On Sunday, as many as 12,000 people attended the drawing, when a ticket with the number 39 led to the unveiling of the 10 of hearts. The queen remained hidden, along with three other cards on the 54-card board. The jackpot was $1.8 million, up from $1.3 million two weeks ago. (A drawing was not held on Labor Day weekend.) There were two big winners Sunday. The 50/50 raffle raised $146,760, the bowling alley said on its Facebook page; half going to the ticket holder and half to the Wags 4 Warriors service dog program. Queen of Hearts raffle explodes at Garrettsville bowling alley How it works: Queen of Hearts is a legal raffle game, which the bowling alley owner started to bring crowds to his business. A deck of playing cards, including two jokers, are randomly placed face down on a board and assigned a number from 1-54. Each card is sealed in plastic by the manufacturer.  Those who buy a ticket choose a number of a card that has not yet been drawn. Once a week, one ticket is drawn and the card with the corresponding number is cut out of the plastic and revealed. If the card is the Queen of Hearts, the one ticket holder wins. The ticket holder receives 90 percent of the jackpot if they are present. If not, he or she receives 50 percent of the jackpot. The remaining numbers are: 5, 36, 42, 46. How it's grown: The crowd and jackpot have grown exponentially each week. Police handle parking and crowds. A band entertains and food sales out on the parking lot are brisk. The 50/50 drawing, which benefits a local charity, is also held each week. Tickets can only be bought at SkyLane, 8311 Windham Street (Ohio Route 82). Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.
