Tom Hanks-piloted ‘Sully’ as solid and unassuming as its hero
Put Tom Hanks in charge of pretty much any vessel — be it the container ship from “Captain Phillips,” the lunar module from “Apollo 13,” even the school bus from “Bachelor Party” — and something is bound to go wrong. But he’s exactly the actor you’d want to calmly save the day without a lot of fuss.

Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks team up to tell the tale of a stoic, heroic 'Sully'
Several factors might have drawn Clint Eastwood to directing "Sully," the story of 2009's "Miracle on the Hudson" emergency landing of a U.S. Airways passenger jet on that frigid New York river, but one that's not the most obvious might be the most significant. "Sully" stars Tom Hanks as Captain...

Investigators dispute ‘Sully’ portrayal: ‘We’re not the KGB’
WASHINGTON — Losing thrust in both engines but still managing to land an airliner full of people in the Hudson River without the loss of a single life is plenty dramatic. But the drama in “Sully,” the movie about the “Miracle on the Hudson” ditching of U.S. Airways Flight 1549, doesn’t stop there. And that’s...

'Sully' offers the untold story of the 'Miracle on the Hudson' water landing of a jet (review)
Clint Eastwood's direction is rock-solid, and the script by Todd Komarnicki, based on the book "Highest Duty" by Sullenberger and co-writer Jeff Zaslow, gives the story the kind of pacing it needs to build to a powerful but subdued crescendo. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- We all know the story. Or do we? In December 2009, US Air flight 1549 took off from New York's La Guardia airport and hit a flock of geese. The bird strike took out both engines. Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger had no choice but to put the plane down in the Hudson River. The landing was successful, and all 155 people on board survived. The event came to be known as "The Miracle on the Hudson," and Sullenberger was hailed as an aviation hero from coast to coast. So where's the movie in this all-too-familiar story? Here's what we didn't know until this movie was made. Executives at US Airways were looking for someone to blame for the loss of the plane. They held hearings trying to prove that Sullenberger had the time and ability to bring the plane back to the airport. Tom Hanks plays Sully with great understatement. Aaron Eckhart plays Jeff Skiles, Sully's younger co-pilot. While newspapers and television talk shows are singing Sully's praises for his courage under fire, for his concern for his passengers, he waits nervously in his hotel room waiting to see if his career is over. Sully has just started his own security firm business, and his family needs money. He wonders if he will lose his pension. He expresses these concerns over the phone to his wife, played by Laura Linney. All of Linney's scenes are of her alone in her suburban kitchen, talking to her worried husband over the phone. Maybe that's why she is the weakest link in an otherwise strong cast. Clint Eastwood's direction is rock-solid, and the script by Todd Komarnicki, based on the book "Highest Duty" by Sullenberger and co-writer Jeff Zaslow, gives the story the kind of pacing it needs to build to a powerful but subdued crescendo. The hearing before the National Transportation Safety Board has all the tension and surprises that any good trial movie needs to succeed. But the heart of the movie takes place when the actual water landing is re-created for the film. This is not the movie you want to see on the night before a flight. "Sully" doesn't have the dramatic fireworks of the 2013 Somali pirate film "Captain Phillips," in which the lead character was also played by Hanks. But the writing, acting and direction all combine for a satisfying real-life-hero, ripped-from-the-headlines story that was well worth telling. REVIEW Sully Who: With Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney and Jamey Sheridan. Directed by Clint Eastwood. Written by Todd Komarnicki. Rated: PG-13. Running time: 96 minutes. When: Opens Friday. Where: Area theaters. Grade: B+
