National Weather Service issues flood warning for Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Ashtabula counties
The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a flood warning for Cuyahoga, Lake, Gauga, and Ashtabula counties through 11:30 p.m. tonight. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The strong thunderstorms and intense snow melt across Northeast Ohio has prompted the National Weather Service in Cleveland to issue a flood warning for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga and Ashtabula counties through 11:30 p.m. this evening. At 11:30 a.m., the weather service radar indicated 1 to 2 inches of rain has already fallen across the warning area, and runoff from the rain will combine with water released from the melting snow pack leading to flooding. According to the warning, areas which will experience flooding include: Cleveland, Painesville, Ashtabula, Willowick, Conneaut, Chardon, Jefferson, Fairport Harbor, Geneva-On-The-Lake, Parma, Lakewood, Euclid, Mentor, Cleveland Heights, Strongsville, Westlake, North Royalton, Solon, Willoughby and Eastlake. Additional rainfall from showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon. Rainfall amounts of a quarter to a half-inch are possible in the warned area. Why is Northeast Ohio getting thunderstorms in February? The National Weather Service urges to never drive through flooded roadways, as the water could be deeper than it looks. Mentor man in custody, infant unharmed after SWAT standoff
A felony theft warrant was served at the 31-year-old man's home in which he barricaded himself in with a 5-month-old infant. MENTOR, Ohio -- Charges have not been filed against a 31-year-old man accused of holding a 5-month-old infant during a six-hour SWAT standoff in Mentor. The infant was not harmed during the incident that ended when the man surrendered outside a house on Connie Drive, police said. Mentor police will determine whether the man will face charges in connection with the standoff, Eastlake police Lt. Robert Gonzalez said. The Mentor SWAT Team, with help from the Lake County SWAT Team and the Mentor Hostage Negotiation Team went to the house at 1:10 p.m. to serve an Eastlake felony theft warrant, Mentor police said in a news release. But the man locked the door and threatened to harm himself and shoot the officers, police said in the news release. Eastlake police asked the U.S. Marshals to assist due to the threats. The man eventually surrendered without incident. The infant was wet and hungry and given to relatives, said Ante Logarusic, a community relations administrator for Mentor police. The standoff is still being investigated. To comment on this story, please visit the crime and courts comments page.

One dead, 10 sickened in Lake County Legionnaires' disease outbreak
The one person who died as a result of the disease was a 54-year-old Cuyahoga County man, A Lake County health official said Wednesday. EASTLAKE, Ohio -- One person is dead and 10 more people were sickened in a Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Lake County, the county's health commissioner said Wednesday.  Lake County investigators, alongside officials with the Ohio Department of Health and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, believe the Legionella bacteria was likely spouted into the air from cooling towers at Consolidated Precision Products (CPP) in Eastlake, Lake County Health Commissioner Ron Graham said. Three of the people who got the disease very likely contracted the bacteria from the plant, including the 54-year-old Cuyahoga County who died as a result of the disease in August, Graham said. All three patients worked either at CPP or directly-neighboring businesses, and they all contracted the disease during the summer months. CPP fully cooperated with the investigation, thoroughly cleaning their cooling towers on Nov. 9, Graham said. No bacteria was found during the post-cleaning tests, the results of which were released Wednesday. Only two of the other Legionnaires' disease cases can likely be linked to CPP. The additional six cases appear to be unrelated to the business, though a definitive link may never be made to bacteria found at CPP because none of the patients were not given blood tests that would reveal specific bacteria strains, Graham said. All eight patients have since recovered.  Lake County health officials will continue to monitor for new cases, as well as look into local businesses with cooling towers so that further education about Legionella bacteria can be provided, Graham said. Legionella bacteria is transmitted through the air or water, not through person-to-person contact. Not everyone exposed to the bacteria becomes sick, but those who do get Legionnaires' disease experience symptoms similar to a severe form of pneumonia.
