Meet quiet, cuddle cat Olive: Cleveland Cutest Cat finalist (photos, poll)
Meet Olive, a finalist in cleveland.com's Cutest Cat contest. This shy kitty may be cautious around new humans, but has firmly ensconced herself as ruler over the other animals in her home. LYNDHURST, Ohio - Olive is on the shy side with people, but the cat has no problem establishing who is the queen of the Kuhns' household when it comes to the family's pot-bellied pig, Milkshakes. Olive enjoys sitting atop her cat palace -- strategically placed by the kitchen door -- so she can watch over him from relative safety inside their Lyndhurst home. "In many ways, she likes to torture him because he is always penned up in the kitchen and she has the run of the household," said Dorothy Kuhns. Olive is one of 10 finalists vying for the title of Greater Cleveland's Cutest Cat (see all 10 contenders). Vote early and often in the poll below, which is open until March 31 at 10 a.m. This quiet 1-year-old Scottish Fold is an affectionate, sweet-tempered family cat who enjoys cuddling with her humans when it's family TV time, especially with 10-year-old Kieran. "She enjoys being with her family, but takes a bit of time to warm up to unfamiliar faces," said Dorothy Kuhns. "Once she is comfortable, she will get close and cuddle up. She loves to just hang out, laying on her back or sitting 'Buddha' style. She is an extremely chill cat." Olive came to the family when it was clear Kieran was struggling each time the family, who volunteers as a foster home for adoptable cats, had to give up one of their charges to a new family. Deciding to surprise him with his own kitty for his birthday, the family chose the Scottish Fold breed for its reputation as family-friendly. Olive was found as the result of an Internet search for Scottish Folds for sale. She was the runt of her litter, and while blessed with a beautiful coat and piercing blue eyes, the family she was born to didn't want her because she was so small. When his birthday arrived, Kieran was presented with a box containing a stuffed cat. When his face registered confusion over the gift, the toy animal was quickly replaced with Olive. "I was so happy, I cried," he said. Because she was so small when she was born, this sweetie suffers from digestive issues, so the Kuhns are careful with her diet, though they say she does love chicken. When it comes to tricks, Kieran said she has "no tricks, just being 'adorable.'" You can vote for Olive, or any of the 10 finalists, below. To see the latest standings, vote in the poll or click view results. The winner will be determined by reader votes (80 percent), combined with that of a celebrity panel of three judges (10 percent) and a panel of kid judges (10 percent).

Careless Cosmic Cupid by Holiday Mathis
Cupid is a baby with a weapon who shouldn't be expected to have the aiming accuracy of an archer with fully developed motor skills. This explains a lot. The French author Andre Maurois suggested, "In literature, as in love, we are astounded by what is chosen by others." Anything goes under the zany air-sign astral influences. St. Valentine's Day probably doesn't have much to do with the real guy: 60-Second Know-It-All

It comes in the middle of February, when we can all use a little color and a romantic pick-me-up. St. Valentine's Day is a happy, cheerful reminder to buy your loved one some flowers and express your devotion. It comes in the middle of February, when we can all use a little color and a romantic pick-me-up. Plus, it's a nearly $20 billion boost to the economy in the form of greeting cards, floral arrangements, dinner reservations and the rest of it. Does it really need to go deeper than that? If you do go looking for the real story, you'll find lots of fantastically detailed accounts like this one from a director of the Christian Broadcasting Network's 700 Club. Now the fact is, all this business of "St. Valentine" being martyred for marrying Christians was considered fiction as early as the 5th century AD. There were lots of early saints named Valentine and there's not a shred of contemporary testimony to support any of this. But why let a few facts get in the way of a great story? Roman Emperor Claudius II Gothicus  The real problem is that tradition has laid the martyrdom of St. Valentine at the feet of a guy who didn't really deserve this calumny: Roman Emperor Claudius II. Let's set the record straight here: Claudius II was a soldier. And a busy one, beating back invading hordes of Goths in the 3rd century with a ferocity that earned him the title "Gothicus." He wouldn't have had much time to persecute Christians even had he been inclined to do so, and there's not a shred of evidence that he had anything against them. So assuming your Valentines Day plans come off without a hitch and you have yourself a lovely, romantic evening - you can thank the imaginations of the medieval monks and Romantic-era fabulists who cooked all this up. You can thank the entrepreneurs who sold you the cards, the flowers and dinner. But poor Claudius II? Leave him out of it.  The 60-Second Know-It-All Project is an Emmy-winning series of informational videos produced by Plain Dealer graphic and video artist William Neff, with sound design and creative collaboration from Plain Dealer photo and sound editor Jon Fobes.
