Unscripted TV Lawsuits Indicate Need for Change (Guest Column)
Two intractable forces have turned a once-healthy unscripted-TV ecosystem toxic over the past several years. The first is the decline of cable channels, which are facing an existential threat from cord-cutting, the grim long-term outlook for their advertising and affiliate revenues, and intensified competition from streaming services like Netflix. The second is the number of... Read more »

Jack Cleveland Casino revenue rebounds in August
Jack Cleveland Casino, which saw revenues decline in July due to the Republican National Convention, rebounded nicely in August. CLEVELAND, Ohio - Jack Cleveland Casino, which saw revenues decline in July due to the Republican National Convention, rebounded in August. It was the only casino or racino in the state that did not have a revenue decline from July to August. Statewide, casino revenue of $62.8 million was a 4.8 percent decline from July. The casino's $16.7 million in revenue in August was an 8.4 percent increase from the prior month, according to the monthly report from the Ohio Casino Control Commission. However, Jack Cleveland's August revenue is less than the $17.1 million it earned last August. Casino officials had said they were expecting higher revenue now that months of road restrictions in and around Public Square have ended. Jack ThistleDown Racino in North Randall, which saw a $1 million gain from June to July, had a $1.1 million drop in August to $9.1 million, according to the Ohio Lottery Commission.  Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park, which had its highest monthly revenue in July - $20.6 million - since opening in December 2013, dropped to $19.6 million in August, a 4.8 percent decline. Statewide revenue from the seven racinos declined 7.6 percent to $74.5 million in August. The state commissions define revenue as the money left after casinos and racinos pay winners and deduct for promotions. Casino and racino officials say year-over-year comparisons typically provide a more accurate reflection of performance than comparing one month to the previous one. Jack Entertainment, formerly Rock Gaming, owns the casinos in Cleveland and Cincinnati and Jack ThistleDown Racino. Hard Rock Rocksino is a joint venture between Hard Rock International and Northfield Park. Penn National Gaming owns the Hollywood casinos in Columbus and Toledo and the racinos near Youngstown and Dayton.   Ohio casinos Statewide  August 2015August  2016 Revenue $66.3  million $62.8 million Table games $20 million $21.7 million Slots $46.3 million $41.1  million Daily win per slot $190 $170 Jack Cleveland Casino Revenue $17.1 million $16.7 million Table games $7.4 million $8.8 million Slots $9.7 million $7.9 million Daily win per slot $189 $154 Jack Cincinnati Casino Revenue $17.3 million $14.6 million Table games $6 million $5.3 million Slots $11.3 million $9.3 million Daily win per slot $186 $154 Hollywood Toledo Revenue $16.2 million $14.6 million Table games $2.7 million $2.3 million Slots $13.5 million $12.3 million Daily win per slot $212 $194 Hollywood Columbus Revenue $16.7 million $16.8 million Table games $3.8 million $5.1 million Slots $11.9 million $11.7 million Daily win per slot $171 $168 Source: Ohio Casino Control Commission Ohio racinos Statewide  August  2015August 2016 Slots $71.8  million $74.5 million Daily win per slot $221 $219 Jack ThistleDown Racino Slots $8.7 million $9.1 million Daily win per slot $219 $201 Hard Rock Rocksino Slots $18.9 million $19.6 million Daily win per slot $268 $280 Hollywood Mahoning Valley Slots $7.9 million $8.3 million Daily win per slot $294 $274 Scioto Downs Slots $12.4 million $12.7 million Daily win per slot $188 $183 Miami Valley Gaming Slots $10.4 million $10.9 million Daily win per slot $211 $216 Belterra Park Slots $6.2 million $6.4 million Daily win per slot $153 $151 Hollywood Dayton Slots $7.2 million $7.2 million Daily win per slot $234 $237 Source: Ohio Lottery Commission
