Retired California judge, Cleveland native and nephew of Don King, dies in murder-suicide, reports say
Herbert Curtis III, 69, shot himself after a standoff with police, reports say. VENTURA, California -- A retired Ventura County judge, a Cleveland native who is the nephew of boxing promoter Don King, shot and killed his girlfriend before taking his own life, according to multiple reports. Police were called to the home of Herbert Curtis III, 69, late Sunday night by neighbors who overheard the couple arguing, the Los Angeles Times reports. Curtis ended up in a standoff with Ventura police, abc7.com reports. Curtis told police he was armed as they attempted to negotiate with him, and they later heard gunshots from inside the home. A SWAT unit was called in and negotiations continued for about three hours, with Curtis refusing to surrender, according to the Ventura County Star. Using a listening device, police heard Curtis' girlfriend, Patricia Payne, 54, say she had been wounded.  SWAT officers entered the house after more shots were heard and Curtis shot himself, reports say. Payne was found alive and taken to a hospital but died of her injuries. No one else was inside the home. Police are still investigating a motive for the shooting. Reports say Payne and Curtis had lived in the home together since November. Ventura Police Commander Sam Arroyo tells the County Star that officers had been called to the home several times for various reasons, including twice on Jan. 18 because of verbal disputes. According to the County Star, Curtis, a nephew of famed boxing promoter Don King, grew up on the East Side of Cleveland and attended Cleveland State University on a track scholarship. He went to the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and went to Ventura in 1975 to work for the district attorney's office. Curtis was Ventura County's first black Superior Court judge, appointed in 1998 and retiring in 2007, the County Star reports. There have been no other black judges since. He was married three times and has two daughters. "The news of his passing is met with great sadness," the court's assistant presiding judge, Kent Kellegrew, said in a statement, according to the Times. "Judge Curtis invested decades of service to the county of Ventura, initially as a criminal prosecutor and thereafter as a judge. The court acknowledges Judge Curtis' contributions and extends its condolences to his family." New York man used taxi, Greyhound bus for getaway after robbing Cleveland bank, police say
Ian Young, 20, is accused of using a taxi as a getaway driver after robbing a Cleveland bank. Ian YoungErie Police Department  CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A New York man is accused of robbing a bank and using a taxi as his getaway car, according to police. Ian Young, 20, of Williamsville, New York is charged with aggravated robbery. He was arrested later in the day in Erie, Pennsylvania. Young is in the Erie County Prison awaiting his extradition hearing.    Young is accused of robbing the Citizen's Bank on Superior Avenue and East 63rd Street. Young walked into the bank about 2 p.m and handed a note to the bank teller that demanded money. He also gestured like he had a gun, according to police. Young left the bank and hopped into an ABC Taxi van. He took the cab to the Greyhound bus station and hopped on a bus to Erie, Pennsylvania, police said. Erie Police Chief Don Dacus said Cleveland police contacted his officers about Young boarding a bus heading for Erie. Erie officers got to the bus station as the passengers were getting off the bus. The officers spotted Young, who ran, Dacus said. Young ran outside the bus station, where more officers were waiting. He was arrested without further incident, Dacus said. He did not have a gun with him when he was arrested, Dacus said. Dacus said there was some confusion over whether Dacus traveled by himself. Erie officers eventually called for a SWAT team to enter the bus because a bathroom was locked. Once they got into the bathroom, no one was inside. Dacus said Young admitted to robbing the bank during an interview with Erie detectives. Dacus also said Young's fingerprints matched up with a person with a different name who was wanted for robbery in Maryland. Homeless men accused of holding Akron man against his will
The 50-year-old victim did not say why the men were at his house, but he did tell Akron police that they punched him in the face several times and would not allow him to answer the door when police arrived. AKRON, Ohio - Three homeless men have been arrested and charged after they were accused of holding an Akron man against his will inside his house Friday. Samuel Crespo, 38, is charged with obstructing official business and misrepresenting identity in Akron Municipal Court. Anton Jeffries, 22, and Tyrone Matthews, 39, are both charged with kidnapping and assault. The three men are being held in Summit County Jail. The men are charged in connection with a late Friday incident during which a 50-year-old man said the trio held him against his will. Akron police were alerted about midnight by the victim's nephew. The incident took place at a house on the 100 block of Jesse Avenue in Akron's North Hill neighborhood. The victim's nephew also told police that one of the men would have a silver handgun. When officers arrived at the Jesse Avenue house, an officer looked through the windows and saw a man with the handgun in his waistband, police said. Officers used the loudspeaker on their cruiser to order the trio to come out of the house after they refused to answer knocks at the door, police said. When that did not work, the Akron SWAT team was called. The SWAT team negotiated with the men  and got them to come outside without further trouble, police said. Officers spoke with the victim once the three homeless men were out of the house. He did not say why the men were at his house, but he did say they punched him in the face several times and would not allow him to answer the door when police arrived. The victim was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital for treatment. Crespo, Jeffries and Matthews are slated to appear in front of a judge Tuesday morning, court records show. An unidentified man barricaded himself inside a Parma home following a single-vehicle crash Friday morning. He surrendered after a two-hour standoff with police. Watch video PARMA, Ohio -- A man surrendered to the SWAT team at about 12:30 p.m. Friday after a nearly three-hour standoff at a Parma home. The man, who police have not yet identified, had barricaded himself inside the house, following a single-vehicle crash Friday morning. "I believe a gun was found inside the residence," Parma police Lt. Kevin Riley said. "There was never a hostage situation." Another man, who was ejected from the vehicle, was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center with unknown injuries, according to police. He was unresponsive when he was taken from the scene, Riley said. "We heard a big bang," Cindy Mechir, who lives across the street from the scene of the standoff, told cleveland.com. "We saw where a car had clipped a utility pole, went through maybe 100 feet of the woods and almost ran into the home." Police responded to reports of a crash, and a man entering a home and confronting a resident in the 6500 block of Broadview Road about 9:30 a.m. The man told the resident he was armed with a weapon, police said. The resident escaped the home. Saint Sergius Russian Orthodox Church owns the house, Rylie said. The church is located next to the house. Schools and day cares in the area were locked down and crisis negotiators were called in. The man surrendered about 30 minutes after negotiators arrived. Cleveland MetroParks rangers armed with assault rifles also blocked off entrances to nearby West Creek Reservation. One ranger said the reservation was closed because of the standoff.
