Florida man shoots, kills cousin testing bulletproof vest
When Joaquin Mendez wondered if his bulletproof vest still worked, his cousin said, "Let's see," police say. Alexandro GaribaldiHillsborough County Sheriff's Office  TAMPA, Florida -- On Saturday night, reports say Joaquin Mendez sat in a chair, put on a bulletproof vest and said he wondered if it still worked. His cousin, Alexandro Garibaldi, reportedly said, "Let's see." It was then that Garibaldi, 24, pulled out a handgun and shot Mendez, 23, in the chest, police tell the Tampa Bay Tribune. The bullet traveled through the vest, and Mendez later died at a hospital. WFLA Channel 8 reports Garibaldi initially told police responding to the home that he heard a gunshot and found Mendez wounded outside. But a witness told police that Garibaldi had shot Mendez, and police found the bulletproof vest inside the house along with blood. The vest had a bullet hole. Garibaldi has been charged with manslaughter with a weapon, and also faces a charge for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He is being held in the Hillsborough County Jail without a bond.
