Fall TV preview 2016: 6 worst new network shows
"Conviction" and "Pure Genius" sink to the bottom of the prime-time barrel this fall. CLEVELAND, Ohio - Each season provides no shortage of candidates for spots at the bottom of the prime-time barrel. In no particular order, here are the rank rookies of the fall season. These are the noxious, hold-your-nose, avoid-at-all-costs, call-the-EPA stinkers: "Notorious" (ABC): "Ludicrous" would be a better title for this witless drama based on the lives of cable news producer Wendy Walker and lawyer Mark Geragos. "Pure Genius" (CBS): For a show about super-smart doctors at a super-smart medical facility, it's pretty dumb . . . and smug . . . and stilted. "Timeless" (NBC): The producers might wish they could travel back in time and start with building material sturdier than cardboard. "Man With a Plan" (CBS): The likable Matt LeBlanc is the man stuck in a thoroughly unlikable comedy. "The Great Indoors" (CBS): Where stale jokes meet stereotypes. "Conviction" (ABC): The insipid drama about a former first daughter may be in last place in terms of quality this fall.

Fall TV preview 2016: 34 shows that won't be back
Although the networks canceled 37 shows last season, three of them will get new life on another channel. CLEVELAND, Ohio - Before considering what's new this fall, here's a quick rundown on the series that won't be returning. Among the long-running shows dumped by networks were Fox's once-dominant "American Idol," ABC's "Castle" and CBS' "The Good Wife." Although the five broadcast networks announced the cancellations of 37 series in May, three of them have been given new leases on prime-time life. "Supergirl," grounded by CBS, is flying over to the CW, where it will get the 8 p.m. Monday spot. "America's Top Model," given the boot by the CW, will hit the runway on cable's VH1. And "Nashville," let go after four ABC seasons, will return on CMT in January. Some landmarks here. This will be the first midseason in 13 years without the January return of "American Idol," which ended its run in April. This will be the first season in 16 years without a "CSI" drama on CBS. Then, of course there were the dismal rookie shows that mercifully ejected from the prime-time realm: ABC's "The Muppets," CBS' "Angel from Hell," Fox's "Minority Report," NBC's "Truth Be Told." If you don't remember these, just remember that they were eminently forgettable. Here is the complete list of the shows that won't be back on the networks this season: ABC: "Agent Carter," "Blood & Oil," "Castle," "Galavant," "The Muppets," "Nashville" (moving to CMT, with fifth season starting Jan. 5), "Of King and Prophets," "Wicked City." CBS: "Angel From Hell," "CSI: Cyber," "The Good Wife," "Limitless," "Mike & Molly," "Person of Interest," "Rush Hour," "Supergirl" (moving to the CW). Fox: "American Idol," "Bordertown," "Cooper Barrett's Guide to the Universe," "Grandfathered," "The Grinder," "Minority Report," "Second Chance." NBC: "Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris," "The Carmichael Show," "Crowded," "Hannibal," "Heartbeat," "Heroes Reborn," "The Mysteries of Laura," "The Player," "Telenovela," "Truth Be Told," "Undateable," "You, Me and the Apocalypse." The CW: "America's Next Top Model" (picked up by VH1), "Beauty and the Beast," "Containment" Note: The reality shows listed are confirmed as canceled. Others are not listed on "what's gone" lists, however, because they're easy to revive, and some that aren't on the fall schedule or midseason lists may return eventually.

After 12 Years, UH's door to learning for students and public looks back in pride, ahead in high hope
First and always foremost, formal instruction for students. [...] giving the entire community access to the complete cultural resources of the university center. The bitterest lesson we have learned, said Ch. 8 general manager Roy Barthold in his 10-year report of two years ago, is the realization that adequate performance of the functions of communications link, town hall and cultural center for the community simply cannot be budgeted by a university or school system. By 1963 more than 40,000 UH students had received lectures on television, and this year alone, college classes on TV account for some 15 hours per week on Ch. 8 with enrollment of 3700 students. In Big Studio Now [...] just this year, Ch. 8 operated from a cramped studio in the Ezekiel Cullen Building on the UH campus. Originally the building was occupied by the short-lived UHF commercial station on Ch. 39, and university officials hopefully planned for the site to become Houston's "Television Center," housing both the local commercial stations and a Ch. 8 building. TV courses at the university now have an enrollment of 3700 students, studying such subjects as mathematics, political science, accounting, trigonometry and biology. NET's five hour of new programs per week fall into four broad categories -cultural affair, public affairs, children's programs and instructional offerings. Houston Public Media's television stations offer PBS programming including kids shows and cooking how-tos. Though faculty members no longer teach classes on the air, studios are used as a classroom on weekends for production classes, said Lisa Shumate, associate vice president and general manager of Houston Public Media.
