Trump Jr. compares refugees to poisoned Skittles: Darcy cartoon
Donald Trump Jr. is proving to be a chip off the ol' bigoted, xenophobic block. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Donald Trump Jr. has made another controversial analogy, this time comparing Syrian refugees to poisoned Skittles. Trump Jr. tweeted a graphic (posted below) from the Trump-Pence campaign showing a bowl of Skittles below a question asking, "If I had a bowl of skittles and I told you just three would kill you.  Would you take a handful?   That's our Syrian refugee problem." Above the graphic, Trump Jr. tweeted, "This image says it all.  Let's end the politically correct agenda that doesn't put America first. #trump2016 Wrigley Company, a division of Mars Inc, which makes Skittles, released the following statement. "Skittles are candy.  Refugees are people. We don't feel it's an appropriate analogy.  We will respectfully refrain from further commentary as anything we say could be misinterpreted as marketing." Trump Jr. had used the analogy before in radio interviews.  It was during another radio interview last week that Junior made a gas chamber analogy, provoking criticism from the Anti-Defamation League.  On WPHT radio in Philadelphia, Trump Jr. complained that the media was giving Hillary Clinton a pass "on every indiscrepancy, on every lie, on every DNC game trying to get Bernie Sanders out" of the race.  He then claimed that "If Republicans were doing that, they'd (the media)be warming up the gas chamber right now."   Responding to complaints, Trump Jr. later said he had used a "poor choice of words."  He said he meant to say " the electric chair" and had done so when making the same point in other interviews. Turns out the bowl of Skittles photo used in Trump Jr.'s tweet was taken by a former refugee six-years ago and posted on flicker.    David Kittos, who is now a British citizen was a refugee who fled Turkish-occupied Cyprus as a child for a better life.  Just like the two young Syrian boys I depict in the visual above were seeking.    Unlike Don Jr., none of them were born with a silver spoon in the their mouths in the land  of plenty as they hungered for safety and liberty. As The Wrigley Company pointed out to Trump Jr., refugees are people. And according to The Cato Institute, the risk of an American being killed by a refugee in a terror attack is 1 in 3.64 million.   What law enforcement is finding, is that many of the domestic terror suspects are second generation, not recent refugees. Don Trump Jr. is proving to be a chip off the ol' bigoted, xenophobic block.  While in Cleveland, for the Republican National Convention, Trump Jr. said at a Wall Street Journal breakfast he might want to also run for public office.   Reince Priebus just threatened that any Republican who didn't endorse Donald Trump may be blocked from seeking the nomination in the future.  So the Republican field could be clear for Don Jr. to seek the presidency in four years.
