Emirati man fatally shot by Hudson police officer had marijuana in his system, tests show
The Emirati man shot during a confrontation with a Hudson police officer had marijuana in his system when he died, the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office said. Watch video HUDSON, Ohio - The Emirati man shot during a confrontation with a Hudson police officer had marijuana in his system when he died, the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office said. Toxicology tests also showed that Saif Nasser Mubarak Alameri, a 26-year-old law student at Case Western Reserve University, did not have any other drugs or alcohol in his system, the medical examiner's office said Thursday. Alameri was unarmed when Hudson police officer Ryan Doran shot him Dec. 4 during a struggle near Hudson Aurora Road, investigators said. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is still investigating the shooting. Alameri crashed his car on the Ohio Turnpike near Interstate 480 shortly before the shooting. The car flipped onto its roof before Alameri got out and ran, investigators said. Investigators have not said why Alameri ran from the crash scene or provided details of the struggle that preceded the shooting. Several 911 callers reported that the car sideswiped another car before it flipped onto its roof. The driver then got out the overturned car and ran, the 911 callers said in recordings released by the Hudson Police Department. "There's something wrong with this guy. He got out of the car running wildly," one caller said. Hudson police released dash cam video from the shooting. Six loud bangs can be heard out of frame in that video. The medical examiner's office said after the shooting that Doran shot Alameri at least five times. Alameri died of a gunshot wound to the head but was also shot once in the face and three times in the left leg, the medical examiner's office said. The shooting was the second of two high-profile incidents involving an Emirati man last year in Northeast Ohio. In October, a Lorain County grand jury chose not to indict a hotel desk clerk accused of falsely reporting that an Emirati guest pledged allegiance to ISIS. Avon officers who were acting on the report detained the man at gunpoint June 29 at the Fairfield Inn and Suites on Colorado Avenue. The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said after the incident that its citizens should avoid wearing traditional garments when traveling abroad. The United Arab Emirates ambassador to the United States spoke with Gov. John Kasich and Ohio Department of Public Safety Director John Born to discuss the Alameri shooting. Officials from the Abu Dhabi Police Department and an embassy consular team representing Alameri's family also met BCI investigators, medical examiners and police, Ambassador Youssef Al Otaiba said in a statement.
