Domestic abuse survivors in Ohio can now hide their voter information: Here's how
The Safe at Home Ohio program took effect Thursday, allowing survivors of domestic violence to hide their addresses as part of their voter information. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- As of Thursday, domestic abuse survivors in Ohio can now vote without having their address become public information. The Safe At Home program aims to protect Ohioans whose abusers might seek out their public information. Its launch comes a month before the deadline for voter registration for this year's presidential election. Since the bill passed in late May, a network of advocates across the state have prepared to enroll people quickly. "We're ready to go," said Nancy Neylon, executive director of the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. Neylon spoke in Cleveland Thursday, along with Ohio Secretary of State John Husted, state Rep. Mike Duffey, state Sen. Sandra Williams, and Linda Johanek, CEO of Cleveland's Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center. The secretary of state's office is partnering with 26 domestic violence facilities. By calling the office, a county board of elections or a local domestic abuse shelter, victims will be connected with advocates who can walk them through the program.  When domestic abuse victims leave their partners, the partners can stalk them, ignoring protective orders, Husted said. He said about 66,000 people statewide are in domestic violence shelters.   When voter information is entered into the Statewide Voter Registration Database, it becomes public information which an abuser could use to find their victim. "I believe what we're doing today will save lives," Duffey said, who co-sponsored the bill.  When the person enrolls in the Safe At Home Program, they're given a P.O. box which they can use as their address. The secretary of state's office would then forward the mail to the person's actual residence, according to the program's website. Also new, Duffey said, is that a victim can ask during a court hearing process to have the phone company isolate their number from a particular account to distance themselves from an abuser and keep them connected with friends and family. For more information, click here to visit the program's website, or call (216)391-HELP for the Cleveland Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center domestic violence hotline.
