Anisfield-Wolf Book Award honorees include 'Hidden Figures' author and Isabel Allende
The Cleveland Foundation announced the winners of its 82nd annual Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards on Thursday. CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland Foundation announced the winners of its 82nd annual Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards on Thursday. The Anisfield-Wolf Awards, established in 1935, are given to books that confront racism, examine diversity and expand society's understanding of class and justice. They are the only national juried prize for such literature. This year's honorees are: Isabel Allende, Lifetime Achievement: Allende is considered the most widely-read author writing in Spanish, having sold more than 67 million books. Born in 1942 in Lima, Peru to Chilean parents, Allende burst onto the literary scene in 1982 with "The House of the Spirits," which began as a letter to her dying grandfather. Peter Ho Davies, Fiction: Davies sees his innovative novel "The Fortunes" as "examining the burdens, limitations and absurdities of Asian stereotypes." Anisfield-Wolf juror Joyce Carol Oates calls it a "prophetic work, with passages here of surpassing beauty." Tyehimba Jess, Poetry: Jess's "Olio" is a physical work of art that imagines and reclaims lost African-American performances from the Civil War until World War I. Karan Mahajan, Fiction: The author took an incident from his New Delhi boyhood, when a car bomb exploded in 1996 in a marketplace near his home, as a spark for his second novel, "The Association of Small Bombs." It tells of three boys caught in the blast, only one of whom survives. Margot Lee Shetterly, Non-Fiction: Shetterly saw her first book, "Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race," top the bestseller lists. Simultaneously, the film version enjoyed critical acclaim, box office success and Academy Awards nominations. "The new Anisfield-Wolf winners broaden our insights on race and diversity," said Henry Louis Gates, Jr., who chairs the jury. "This year, we honor a breakthrough history of black women mathematicians powering NASA, a riveting novel of the Asian American experience, a mesmerizing, poetic exploration of forgotten black musical performance and a spellbinding story of violence and its consequences." The Anisfield-Wolf winners will be honored Sept. 7 at the State Theatre in Cleveland, hosted by the Cleveland Foundation and emceed by Jury Chair Gates. Allende does plan to attend the ceremony, which will be part of Cleveland Book Week. For additional information, and a complete list of the recipients since 1935, visit

Mom threatened witness to deadly Cleveland shooting for son, police say
Kajuana Underwood, 38, is accused of threatening a witness to a deadly shooting, according to police. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A woman threatened a witness to a fatal shooting in order to help her son, who is embroiled but not charged in the case, according to court records. Kajuana Underwood, 38, is charged with intimidating a witness. She is not in police custody and a warrant was issued for her arrest. Underwood issued the threat at gunpoint on Jan. 30, court records say. Court records do not describe exactly how Underwood's son is connected to the case; they only say he's "involved" in the Oct. 24 fatal shooting of Christopher Bishop, 20. Bishop was killed during a fight with another man in the 9200 block of Wade Park Avenue in the city's Hough neighborhood. Several witnesses reported seeing the fight, police said. The other man shot Bishop in the chest and ran away. No arrests have been made in the case. Bishop was found dead in the street, police said.  If you'd like to comment on this story, visit Friday's crime and courts comments section.

3 fundraisers top $19,000 for family of Cleveland officer David Fahey
Three fundraisers held at downtown Cleveland bars for the family of officer David Fahey, who was killed last month, have raised more than $19,000. CLEVELAND, Ohio - A trio of fundraisers held at Cleveland bars raised $19,430 for the family of David Fahey, the police officer killed by a hit-and-run driver last month. Tilted Kilt in Cleveland raised $11,430 in sales and cash donations, a rep for the downtown bar said this week. The all-day benefit was held Feb. 2. That same night, a few blocks away, Harry Buffalo staged a "Cheers for Dave" event and brought in "about $5,000," according to a general manager for the bar, which charged $30 admission. And the first fundraiser, June 26 at Masthead Brewing Co. on Superior Avenue, drew $3,000 in sales of beer, shirts and wristbands. Fahey was killed June 24 as he was setting up road flares on Interstate 90 in Cleveland. A Lorain man, Israel Alvarez, was arrested and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and felony hit-and-run in connection with the case. Fahey is the first officer killed in the line of duty since 2008, when Patrolman Derek Owens was shot during a chase on the city's Southeast side. Those who want to contribute can go to
